"Prominent Businessman, beloved Husband and Father"

PLYMOUTH Paul J. Carey, 84, of Plymouth, died peacefully, Sunday, January 15, 2012, at his home with his family by his side after a courageous battle with a long illness. He was the loving husband of Jane (Gross) Carey, with whom they celebrated their Fifty Ninth Wedding Anniversary last November.

Born May 22, 1927, in Boston, he was a son of the late Thomas A. Carey and the late Rena (Gilbride) Carey. He was educated in Tewksbury, graduating from Tewksbury Memorial High School. After his graduation, at age 17, he enlisted to serve in the United States Navy during World War II. Upon the end of the war, he attended Florida State University where he was the Cadet Colonel, Commander for the Air Force ROTC. After only three and a half years, he graduated from Florida State with a degree in City Management.

Mr. Carey was a Past President of the Lowell Rotary Club and a member of Rotary International. He was a founding member of the House of Hope, and was a Regional Organizer for the United Way. He was also a member of the Engineers Club in Boston, the Yorick Club, and was a longtime member of Vesper Country Club, where he enjoyed playing cards, as he was a gifted gin player and also enjoyed playing poker. His favorite pastime was spending time with his family.

From 1965 to 1985, Mr. Carey was the owner and operator of Household Furniture on Market Street in Lowell.

In addition to his wife, Jane, he is survived by his children, Paul J. Carey and his wife, Barbara, of Derry, NH, Marcella J. Jordan and her husband, Ed, of Midlothian, VA, and William J. Carey of Honolulu, HI; his grandchildren, Melissa Carey of Watertown, Julie Carey of Portland, ME, and Robert Andrews and Harry Andrews both of Midlothian, VA; and as one of fifteen children, he is also survived by many brothers and sisters.

He was also grandfather to the late Steven Carey who died in 2011, as well as several other close family members throughout the years.
