
Donald E. ‘Don’ Scott
BRIDGEPORT CT Donald E. ‘Don’ Scott, 86, of Bridgeport, CT, formerly of Lowell and St. Petersburg, FL, died Monday, October 10, 2011, at Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut, after a brief illness. He was the husband of Dorothy (Taylor) Scott, with whom he would have celebrated their Sixth Wedding Anniversary this coming December. He was also the widower of the late Corinne (O’Brien) Scott who died in June 1984.
Born July 2, 1925, in Lowell, he was a son of the late William D. and the late Irene (LeLacheur) Scott, and grew up in the Highlands Section of the City, was educated in the local schools, and graduated from Lowell High School, Class of 1943. He immediately enlisted to serve with the United States Marines during World War II, serving in the Asiatic Pacific Theater . From February 19, 1945 to March 16, 1945, he was involved in the Battle of Iwo Jima, and was currently one of the last survivors of that conflict and a life member of the Iwo Jima Survivors’ Association.
After his honorable discharge he returned to the Lowell area, making his home in the Belvidere Section of the City, where he was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church until moving to St. Petersburg, Florida, twenty five years ago, where he was a communicant of St. Jude the Apostle. For over thirty eight years, he worked for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts with the Department of Public Welfare, retiring as an Assistant Director.
A former Lowell City Councilor from 1976 to 1977, he also served as Chairman and member of the Lowell Board of Health for seventeen years and served on the Board of Catholic Charities. Mr. Scott was also a member of the 5th Marine Division Association, the American Legion, and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans as well as a life member and charter member of the World War II National Memorial Washington D.C.
Don loved doing crossword puzzles, enjoyed traveling, especially cruising and trips to Hampton Beach. He also enjoyed spending time with his large family, and especially enjoyed the festive family gatherings every summer for his birthday.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, and as the widower of the late Corinne (O’Brien) Scott, he is also survived by their children, Donald F. Scott and his wife, Colleen, of Nashua, NH, Corinne Joly and her husband, Doug, of New Ipswich, NH, Michael Scott and his wife, Cynthia, of Carolina Beach, NC, Sondra Stagnone and her husband, Philip, of Derry, NH, Brian Scott and his wife, Kathleen, of Scarborough, ME, and Bobby Scott and his fiance, Sallie Leverenz of Chicago; twelve grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
He was also the brother of the late William Scott, the late Allan Scott, the late Phyllis McDermott, and the late Mary Scott and grandfather of the late Aubrey Scott.
